Online turbidity instruments are used in water treatment process and distribution systems globally to measure turbidity or quantify the "cloudiness" or insoluble matter present in the drinking water. Many organic and inorganic items such as sand, silt, solids, precipitates, spores and bacteria found in drinking water contribute to the water cloudiness or turbidity. Turbidimeters are the instruments we use to help operators and treatment facilities quickly detect microorganisms and certain bacteria that could be harmful to the population even in low concentrations. This turbidity measurement instrument has to be accurate, sensitive and reliable to ensure that the drinking water is contaminant free. US EPA vs EU Drinking Water Standards The US EPA has long required turbidimeters and turbidity monitoring as found in the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and has defined the standard US EPA Method 180.1 Determination of Turbidity by Nephelometry. NTU is the measurement unit used for EPA Method 180.1 and is defined as Nephelometric Turbidity Unit. This 180.1 white light turbidity method measures scattered white light at 90 degrees from the incident light beam. Online US EPA 180.1 process turbidimeters use these NTU measurement units. The EU Drinking Water Directive has identified turbidity measurement as one of several fixed monitoring parameters required for all water that is intended for human consumption. The European drinking water protocol used for turbidimeters is ISO 7027. This method uses the unit FNU which stands for Formazin Nephelometric Unit. In contrast to the US EPA method 180.1, the ISO 7027 method measures in FNU with an infrared light source. The infrared light source and FNU unit is widely used for turbidity instruments globally and often found as the unit for submersible turbidimeters. This wastewater treatment plant uses two 90 degree V-notch weirs along with an Ultrasonic Flow Meter system from MCE Process and Nivelco to accurately measure the treated waste water as it flows out of the plant into the receiving waters. But what if you have a flow meter application like this dual 90 Degree V Notch Weir or another primary flow device? MCE Process and Nivelco have you covered with a best of breed solution for any wastewater flow application. How Does a Ultrasonic Flowmeter with V-notch Weir Flowmeter Work? The two v-notch weirs act as the primary flow measurement devices for the system. Primary measuring devices like these weirs provide a reliable way of producing a measurable head (or water level) above the crest elevation. The V-notch weirs are are available in various angles and we typically fabricate them out of 1/4" or larger aluminum plate. We can even provide them as fabricated fiberglass weirs. The head 0r water level above the crest (or bottom of the V) of this 90 Degree V-notch weir is accurately measured by a Nivelco EasyTREK ultrasonic level transmitter. The integrated ultrasonic level transmitter and flow meter sends a scaled 4-20 mA + HART signal over two wires to the Nivelco MultiCONT multichannel display and process controller. The MultiCONT can act as a fully featured multichannel process controller in many applications but here it simply provides a remote display of the instantaneous level in feet along with flow in GPM (Gallons Per Minute). The MultiCONT process controller also provides the accumulated flow in both resettable and non-resettable totalizers. The 4-20 mA signal is then looped through the wastewater effluent sampler and back to the RTU and SCADA system for analysis and archiving. From a traditional measurement perspective it is preferred to measure flow in a full pipe if at all possible. Reliable Wastewater Effluent Sampling Wastewater effluent sampling can be challenging for treatment plant operations. Every wastewater sample is valuable.  Missed samples and failures can lead to loss of data in reports, overtime for grabbing additional samples and even compliance issues.  Vacuum pump water sampling technology offers a significant improvement over peristaltic pump technology for water sampling. 48 Hour Meter Delivery and On Site Install

MCE Process is committed to meeting our customer needs and responding on their timeline.  Sometimes this means going the extra mile with a quick delivery and install. And by quick, we mean 24 hour delivery and next day installation.   The Challenge We were contacted by Wright State University at 2:30 on a Thursday afternoon and advised they needed a flow meter on a 12” potable drinking water supply from a public utility. The other important detail that was quickly revealed was the flow meter had to be on line and running by Sunday morning at 7:00 am. Experience and confidence in our solutions and  our team at MCE Process prepared our reply without flinch or hesitation, "We'll be there and have you up and running by Saturday". OK we did gasp just a bit! Our Solution We immediately went on site and assessed the measurement application. Cutting into the line and installing a meter would not fit into the time line for this installation. An insertion paddle wheel style meter simply wouldn't do for the accuracy required or the piping configuration. We decided on a Dwyer Instruments transit time ultrasonic clamp on flow meter for the application. This included the Dwyer UXF2-11P1 Ultrasonic flow converter, SX3-D0 Ultrasonic Flow Sensors and a pair of SX3C-2B Sensor Cables. Meter accuracy was also critical to this 48 hour application. Wright State needed to have a highly accurate meter accepted for billing purposes by the utility. We coordinated with the City of Fairborn and determined a Dwyer meter would meet the application and satisfy the billing requirements. By Saturday afternoon we had the meter installed and accurately measuring flow. A 48 hour meter delivery and installation! We not only sell great products and solutions, we partner with great suppliers, field engineers and team members who understand that normal deliveries do not always fit the in the real world time loop.
