The Challenges of Partially Full Pipe Flow Measurement

Measuring flow in partially filled pipes provide unique challenges if you want to measure the flow both reliably and accurately. The challenge of of measuring flow in partially filled pipes is very common in water, wastewater, stormwater and industrial process applications. The pipes do not run completely full all the time but you still need to measure the flow of water in the pipe. From a traditional measurement perspective it is preferred to measure flow in a full pipe if at all possible. This can be costly and time consuming due to the construction or piping required to create a full pipe situation. One solution is construct a siphon tube but that can be expensive and timely. Others now offer magmeters for partially filled pipes. The technology is great but the upfront costs and cut in costs are not ideal for all applications. Still others offer other area velocity solutions that don’t look at the entire profile so you end up with lower accuracy in the end. The real world requirements for a partially filled pipe flow meter requires us to look at other flow measurement options as it is often either difficult to achieve full flow under all conditions or not economically feasible to make the needed piping changes.

Getting to the Flow Measurement Points

The biggest problem when installing a partially filled pipe flow meter or measuring flow in partially full pipes is gaining access to the inside of these pipes in order to measure the flow. Traditionally, most of these points of flow measurement remain unmeasured as no monitoring points are readily available or the costs to make flow measurement access points are just too high.

The Solution

Flow measurement in partially filled pipes can be achieved with the use of a MACE Meters partially filled pipe flow meter. This is solved with a MACE FloPro XCi in conjunction with a MACE insertion velocity sensor and a MACE EchoFlo ultrasonic depth sensor.

This solves the problem of measuring flow in partially filled pipes without the added cost of fiberglass metering manholes, excavation, concrete and construction as the flow sensors for the system can even be set up for direct burial!

In the example shown above, a FloPro XCi is being used to measure & display velocity and depth while calculating the flow rate from those variable. The Mace Meters FloPro XCI also provides a cumulative flow total for logging and reporting. With a MACE WebComm card installed, these readings are made available 24/7 on the MACE website. The WebComm card and service also allows you to be alarmed via SMS/email to any mobile phone or device.

The FloPro XCi system includes:

  • Ruggedized weatherproof enclosure
  • Data logger
  • LCD display
  • 12V Battery and/or Power Supply
  • Required cards to match your outputs needed
  • Velocity/level sensors

Options include:

  • Optional Solar Panel (5W to 10W as required)/ Charger / Built-in Charge Controller / Regulator
  • I/O Card – 2) 4-20 mA inputs, 2) 4-20 mA outputs, 2) Digital Inputs, 2) Digital Outputs, 12VDC Sensor Power
  • FloSI Card – SCADA Interface, MODBUS RTU, RS232, RS485 SDI-12 V1.3 compliant, ASCII, RS232, Third Party Dataloggers, Radio / Telemetry Networks
  • Pulse I/O Card – 1) Input, 1) Output, 5VDC and 12VDC Sensor Power
  • SDI-12 Master Card – SDI-12 V1.3 compliant, 12VDC Sensor Power
  • WebComm Card – allows easy access for retrieval of field data via GSM / cell modem
